OVERVIEW

The proposed Diploma in Midwifery course at Lyantonde School of Nursing and Midwifery in Uganda is designed to provide students with comprehensive knowledge and skills in the field of midwifery. The course duration is 18 months, during which students will receive a well-rounded education and practical training to become competent midwives.

WHAT IS INVOLVED

  1. Introduction to Midwifery: Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of midwifery, including the history, philosophy, and principles of midwifery care. They will also learn about the roles and responsibilities of a midwife.
  2. Anatomy and Physiology: This module will focus on the anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system, pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum period. Students will gain a deep understanding of the physiological processes involved in pregnancy and childbirth.
  3. Antenatal Care: Students will learn about prenatal care, including assessing the health of pregnant women, identifying high-risk pregnancies, conducting routine check-ups, and providing support and education to expectant mothers.
  4. Intrapartum Care: This module will cover the stages of labor, pain management techniques, monitoring fetal well-being, assisting with normal deliveries, and managing complications during childbirth.
  5. Postnatal Care: Students will be trained in providing postpartum care to mothers and newborns, including monitoring maternal recovery, breastfeeding support, newborn assessments, and recognizing and managing postpartum complications.
  6. Neonatal Care: This module will focus on the care of newborns, including assessment, resuscitation techniques, breastfeeding support, and common neonatal conditions.
  7. Family Planning and Reproductive Health: Students will learn about various contraceptive methods, counseling on family planning, and promoting reproductive health in the community.
  8. Midwifery Ethics and Legal Issues: This module will cover ethical principles in midwifery practice, patient rights, informed consent, confidentiality, and legal aspects related to midwifery care.
  9. Community Midwifery: Students will have the opportunity to engage with the community and gain practical experience in providing midwifery care in different settings, including rural and underserved areas.
  10. Professional Development: This module will focus on developing professional skills, communication skills, teamwork, leadership, and continuous professional development.

Throughout the course, students will participate in practical training, clinical rotations, and simulated scenarios to enhance their practical skills and critical thinking abilities. They will also have opportunities for hands-on experience in maternity wards and community health centers.

Upon successful completion of the Diploma in Midwifery course, graduates will be eligible to work as qualified midwives, providing quality care to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. They can work in hospitals, maternity centers, private clinics, or pursue further education in the field of midwifery or related disciplines.
