Advanced Skills for Maternal and Newborn Care

Program Overview

The Diploma in Midwifery prepares students for registration as qualified midwives capable of managing complex pregnancies, deliveries, and postnatal care. This advanced program builds upon foundational midwifery knowledge, developing clinical expertise, leadership abilities, and the confidence to handle emergencies. Graduates emerge as skilled professionals ready to reduce maternal and infant mortality through competent, compassionate care.

Curriculum & Training

The curriculum covers advanced antenatal care, complicated labor management, emergency obstetrics, neonatal resuscitation, and reproductive health. Students develop skills in clinical decision-making, health education, and maternity unit management. Extensive clinical rotations at hospital maternity wards and health centres provide supervised experience in managing deliveries, recognizing complications, and making timely referrals.

Career Opportunities

Diploma holders qualify as registered midwives and find employment in government hospitals, private clinics, NGO programs, and rural health centres across Uganda. They lead maternity units, conduct deliveries, manage obstetric emergencies, and provide family planning services. The diploma also provides a pathway to bachelor’s degree programmes in midwifery and specialized maternal health training.
