Preventive Care and Community Health – The LSNM Approach

At Lyantonde School of Nursing & Midwifery, we believe that true healthcare extends beyond the walls of a hospital. Our mission is to apply a competence-based curriculum that creates committed, creative practitioners with high moral and professional standards for effective, demand-driven quality healthcare and prevention services

One of our core objectives is to “provide training in health-related disciplines by promoting innovative medical professional education that engages more of preventive than treatment and cure” . This philosophy is brought to life through our community health unit, Youth Action for Health.

Registered as a Community-Based Organization with Lyantonde District Social Services, Youth Action for Health serves as the school’s entry point to communities, preparing trainees for preventive community and personal health education . Students learn to conduct participatory research in population health and socio-economic aspects of development, contributing to evidence-based decision-making that can influence policy development .

This approach reflects the school’s vision: “A center of excellence for providing knowledge, practical skills and high level of competence where both local and international Nurses & Midwives share the best practices to participate fully in improving peoples’ lives for sustainable livelihoods” .

Whether through our main campus along the Mbarara-Masaka Road or our study centres in Mbarara, Masaka, Ibanda, Kamwengye, and Fort Portal, every LSNM student graduates with not only clinical skills but also a deep understanding of their role in community health transformation.
